Follow Him

Be humble and submit to the Lord’s will. We sometimes look at others and we envy or covet their skills or abilities. We want to be better at certain things, and can certainly improve with training and effort. But we also must accept the gifting we have received, and accept where we have not received other gifts.

Don’t beat yourself up for not having received a particular calling. The calling and the gifting is from God, and it is to be used to glorify God.

Be faithful to fully invest and develop the gifts He has given you.

Follow Him.

Solitude and Silence

Begin your day in solitude and silence.

Be still in the presence of God, and put aside your hurry.

Wait for the Lord, and receive the peace of His presence.

Do not rush into the day with anxiety or fear.

Be strengthened and be confident that He is in you, that He is with you, and that He is always at work around you, through His Spirit.

God is Lord over all.

Surrender this day to Him.

Key Concepts from “Atomic Habits” – chapters 1 & 2

The following are quotes from the “Atomic Habits” audio book (by James Clear):

“Habits are the compound interest of self improvement.”

“Getting 1% better every day counts a lot in the long-run.”

“Success is the product of daily habits, not once-in-a-lifetime transformations.”

“Your outcomes are a lagging measure of your habits.”

“You get what you repeat.”

“The goal cannot be what differentiates the winners from the losers.”

“It is the Systems.”

“Goals are about the results you want to achieve.  Systems are the processes that lead to those results.”

“Goals are good for setting a direction.  Systems are best for making progress.”

“System of continuous small improvements.”

“You’re left chasing the same outcome because you never changed the system behind it.  You treated a symptom without addressing the cause.”

“Achieving a goal only changes your life for the moment.  That’s the counter-intuitive thing about improvement. We think we need to change the results, but the results are not the problem.”

“What we really need to change are the systems that caused those results.”

“When all of your hard work is focused on a particular goal, what is left to push you forward after you achieve it?  This is why many people find themselves reverting to their old habits after accomplishing a goal.”

“The purpose of setting goals is to win the game.  The purpose of building systems is to continue playing the game.”

“It is your commitment to the process that will determine your progress.”

“You do not rise to the level of your goals.  You fall to the level of your systems.”

“We try to change the wrong thing.”

“We try to change our habits in the wrong way.”

There are 3 levels at which change can occur:

  • Changing your outcomes – results
  • Changing your process –habits and systems
  • Changing your identity –beliefs and assumptions

“The ultimate form of intrinsic motivation is when a habit becomes part of your identity.”

It’s one thing to say “I’m the type of person who wants this.”  It’s entirely different to say “I’m the type of person who is this.”

“True behavior change is identity change. ”

“Improvements are only temporary, until they become part of who you are.”

“The goal is not to read a book.  The goal is to become a reader.  The goal is not to run a marathon.  The goal is to become a runner. The goal is not to learn an instrument.  The goal is to become a musician.”

“The more you repeat a behavior, the more you reinforce the identity associated with that behavior.”

“The process of building habits is actually the process of becoming yourself.”

“We change bit-by-bit, day-by-day.”

“Every action you take is a vote for the person you want to become.”

“If you keep casting the same votes you’ve always cast, you’re going to keep getting the same results you always have.”

“If nothing changes, nothing is going to change.”

“Decide the type of person you want to be. Prove it to yourself with small wins.”

Too Burdened

Precious Child of the King,

The burdens you carry are too much.  You are not made to carry these loads.

You try so hard, and you work so diligently.  Striving to be your best, to live with discipline, and to fulfill the calling you have received.  You are determined to control as much as you can by your own strength and ability.

But you take upon your shoulders the weight of burdens that you cannot bear.  Burdens that you should not bear.  Burdens that are not yours to carry.

You were made to live with freedom from these weights.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy and my burden is light”  Matthew 11:28-30

Lay your burdens at the feet of Christ.

Cast all of your anxieties upon Him.

Release your grip.

Entrust it all to Him.  Surrender.

The fear is that when we let go, then all will be lost.  But the truth is that when we let go, we will finally find peace.

The heavier the burden, the tighter your hold, and the greater the fear that your release will result in disaster.  But freedom is found in the realization that any perception of control is a deception.  In fact, when you try to control things apart from the will of God, you only add to your frustration.

You must lay your burden at His feet.

But do not think you can then go do what you want.  He says to “take my yoke upon you” … His yoke is not a heavy burden of legalism or suppression.

But it is a life dedicated to following Him.

“Then He said to them all:  “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.  For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it.  What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, and yet lose of forfeit his very self?”  Luke 9:23-25

Surrender your burdens to Jesus.

Die to yourself so that you might find true life.

“Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.”  1 Peter 5:7

Follow Christ.

Find rest for your soul.
